Skin Care for Mumbai Weather: A Light Routine for Humidity, Monsoon and October Heat
Skin care for Mumbai weather is about keeping things light: a thin, non-greasy moisturiser, a broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning and a proper cleanse at night to remove sweat, dust and sunscreen. Mumbai is humid for most of the year and gets a very heavy monsoon from about June to September, so thick creams and many layers usually feel sticky and can leave skin congested.
Then there is the famous October heat after the rains, a short, mild winter, long commutes in crowded trains and traffic, salty sea breeze and cold AC offices. Here is how to keep one simple routine and adjust it through the Mumbai year.
What Mumbai weather does to your skin, season by season
| Months (roughly) | Weather | What skin usually feels like | Small change that helps |
|---|---|---|---|
| March to May | Hot, very humid, strong sun | Oily T-zone, sweat bumps, tan on face and arms | Gel or light cream, sunscreen reapplied, wash off sweat at night |
| June to September | Heavy monsoon, damp air, wet commutes | Dull-looking, damp skin, small bumps, irritation in folds | Dry skin fully after rain, gentle face wash, fewer products |
| October | "October heat": hot, humid, sun is back | Shiny, sweaty, easily irritated skin | Lightest layers of the year, sunscreen without fail |
| November to February | Mild, less humid, a few cooler, drier days | Skin balances out; some tight cheeks in AC | A slightly richer night cream only if cheeks feel tight |
Mumbai's "winter" is short and mild, so most people never need a heavy winter cream. The bigger risk is using too much product in humid air. Our guide on lightweight night cream for humid weather explains which textures sit well in this climate.
Sunscreen in Mumbai: daily, including monsoon days
Mumbai sun is strong from mid-morning, and the glare off the sea and wet roads adds to it. Grey monsoon skies still let a lot of UV through.
- Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher as the last morning step, about two finger-lengths for face and neck.
- Gel or fluid sunscreens usually feel less heavy in humidity than thick creams.
- Reapply before heading out again after lunch, and after wiping a sweaty face.
- Evening walks on the sea face still count if the sun is out; a cap helps.
If you come home from the beach with hot, tight skin, our after-sun skincare guide shows what to do that evening.
A simple daily routine for Mumbai skin
Morning
- Gentle face wash with cool or lukewarm water. No scrubbing.
- A pea-sized amount of light moisturiser. Our Avocado Glow Cream 15 g (₹399) has only avocado and aloe vera, with no kojic acid, so it is easy to wear under sunscreen.
- Sunscreen, every day.
Night
- Cleanse properly to remove sweat, train dust, pollution and sunscreen. Cleanse twice if you wore makeup or water-resistant sunscreen; see how to remove makeup before bed.
- A thin layer of night cream. Oily and combination skin can use half a pea-sized amount and keep the nose and forehead very light. Our Avocado Korean Night Cream (25 g, ₹649) has avocado, aloe vera, vitamin B3 and kojic acid; if you use it, wear sunscreen every morning.
- Sleep with a clean face under a fan or AC. Heavy cream on a sweaty face is a common reason for small bumps.
Patch test any new cream on the jawline for a few nights first; our patch test guide explains how. You can compare all options on the night creams page.
Monsoon in Mumbai: June to September
Mumbai rain is heavy and constant for weeks, and getting soaked on the way to the station is normal. Damp skin and damp clothes together cause most rainy-season trouble.
- Carry a small towel or tissues. Pat your face dry after getting wet, then reapply a little moisturiser if your skin feels tight.
- Change out of wet clothes and socks as soon as you can. Keep the neck, underarms and feet dry.
- If you waded through flood water, wash your feet and legs with soap and clean water as soon as possible, and see a doctor for any cut or wound.
- Pause new actives and strong scrubs if your skin feels irritated.
Our monsoon skincare routine has the full rainy-season plan, and night cream for oily skin in monsoon helps if you get shiny by morning.
October heat and oily skin
When the rains stop, Mumbai often gets a hot, sticky few weeks with strong sun. Many people feel their skin is "very oily", but it is often oily and dehydrated at the same time: shiny on top, tight after washing.
- Wash your face twice a day, plus once after a very sweaty commute if needed. More than that usually dries skin out and makes shine worse.
- Blot with tissue paper during the day instead of washing again.
- Change pillow covers two or three times a week in hot months.
- Keep hair oil off the forehead and hairline overnight.
Our skincare routine for oily skin in India goes deeper on face wash and moisturiser choice. For painful, deep or spreading pimples, see a dermatologist instead of trying more creams.
Local trains, traffic and AC offices
A typical Mumbai day can mean a hot platform, a packed train or a long ride in traffic, then hours in a cold office. That mix leaves the T-zone shiny and cheeks tight. Keep a small kit at your desk: a light moisturiser for tight areas, sunscreen for the trip home, lip balm and tissues. Our AC dry skin routine explains how to manage long office hours.
Sea air and the short winter
Salty sea breeze and dust can leave skin feeling rough on windy days, especially near the coast. A gentle evening cleanse and a thin moisturiser are enough; there is no need for strong exfoliants. From November to February, if your cheeks feel tight in the mornings, add a little more night cream only on those areas. Living in Chennai or another coastal city? Our skin care for Chennai weather guide covers a similar climate with a different monsoon season.
Short answers
Which moisturiser is best for Mumbai weather? A light gel or thin cream that absorbs quickly suits Mumbai's humid weather best; heavy, oily creams tend to feel sticky and may clog pores.
Do I need sunscreen in Mumbai during the monsoon? Yes. Clouds let much of the UV through, so apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning, even on rainy days.
Can I use night cream in Mumbai's humidity? Yes, in a thin layer on clean skin. Oily skin can use half a pea-sized amount and keep the T-zone light.
Why is my skin oily in October in Mumbai? The October heat brings strong sun and humidity together, so skin sweats and shines more. Gentle cleansing, light layers and blotting usually help.
Does Mumbai have a winter skin season? Only a short, mild one from about November to February. Most people just need a little extra cream on tight areas, mainly because of AC.
