Skincare After Sun Exposure in India: What to Do and What to Pause

Good skincare after sun exposure in India starts with cooling and calming, not with brightening. In the first day or two, rinse with cool water, use something soothing like aloe vera, moisturise gently and pause strong actives. Once your skin feels normal again, sunscreen and a steady routine help any tan fade with time.

Whether it was a beach day in Goa, a wedding outdoors, a long bike ride or simply a hot commute, this guide shows what to do the same evening, the next few days, and the weeks after, plus the signs that mean you should see a doctor.

Tan, sunburn or heat rash?

Darker skin tones can burn too. Burns on brown skin may look less red and feel more like heat, tightness or stinging.

The same evening: cool and calm

  1. Get out of the sun and heat. Sit in shade or a cool room.
  2. Rinse with cool, not icy, water. No scrubbing, and no hot shower.
  3. Use a mild cleanser to wash off sweat, sunscreen and dust, then pat dry very gently.
  4. Apply something soothing. Plain aloe vera gel or a simple, fragrance-light cream helps skin feel calmer. A cool compress, a clean cloth dipped in cool water, can help too.
  5. Moisturise. Sun and wind dry the skin; a gentle cream helps it feel comfortable.
  6. Drink water. Heat and sun leave you dehydrated.

Our guide on aloe vera in face cream explains why it is so widely used after sun, and avocado cream vs aloe vera gel helps you choose between a gel and a cream.

Skincare after sun exposure: what to pause

For a few days, or until any redness and stinging have settled, stop:

  • scrubs, face packs that dry hard, and peel-off masks
  • retinol and exfoliating acids such as glycolic or salicylic acid
  • kojic acid, high-strength vitamin C and other brightening actives
  • toners with alcohol and products with strong fragrance
  • waxing, threading and facials on the affected area
  • home remedies like lemon, tomato or raw potato rubbed hard on burnt skin

These can sting on sun-stressed skin and may leave it looking more uneven, not less.

The next 3 to 7 days

  • Keep it simple: mild cleanser, a soothing moisturiser twice a day, sunscreen in the morning.
  • Let peeling skin lift on its own. Do not pull off flakes.
  • Stay in the shade as much as you can, and wear a hat or carry an umbrella.
  • Wear loose, breathable cotton if your neck or arms were burnt too.

From our range, the Avocado Glow Cream 15 g (₹399) contains avocado and aloe vera only, with no kojic acid or other actives, so it is a gentle option for these days, morning or night. If you are not sure your skin is ready for anything new, plain aloe vera gel is a fine choice. For sensitive skin, see our skincare routine for sensitive skin.

After a week: dealing with a tan

Once your skin feels normal again, you can return to your usual routine and bring back actives one at a time. A tan fades on its own as skin renews, roughly every 4–6 weeks, as long as you protect it from more sun. Ingredients such as niacinamide, kojic acid, vitamin C or glutathione can help skin look more even over 8–12 weeks.

From our range, the Avocado Korean Night Cream 25 g (₹649), with avocado, aloe vera, vitamin B3 and kojic acid, is a good night cream to return to once your skin is calm. Our full guide to night cream for tanned skin covers this stage in detail. You can see all options on our night cream shop page.

Prevent it next time

  • Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen, SPF 30 or more, about two finger-lengths for face and neck.
  • Reapply every two to three hours outdoors, and after swimming or heavy sweating.
  • Choose a gel or fluid sunscreen if creams feel sticky in Indian humidity.
  • Plan outdoor time before 10 am or after 4 pm when you can.
  • Remember water, sand and roads reflect sun onto your face.

None of our creams contain SPF, so they do not replace sunscreen. Our summer skincare routine for India has more on daily sun care.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor quickly if you have blisters over a large area, swelling, severe pain, fever, chills, headache, nausea or confusion after time in the sun, or if a child or elderly person is badly sunburnt. See a dermatologist if a mole or spot changes after sun exposure, or if dark patches stay for months.

Short answers

What should I put on my face after sun exposure? Cool water, a mild cleanser, aloe vera or a simple soothing cream, and moisturiser.

Can I use kojic acid or vitamin C after a sunburn? Wait until redness and stinging settle, usually a few days, then reintroduce slowly.

How long does a tan take to fade? Skin renews roughly every 4–6 weeks, so a tan fades gradually with daily sunscreen.

Is aloe vera good after sun? Yes, it is widely used to help sun-stressed skin feel cool and soothed.

Do Indian skin tones get sunburnt? Yes. Darker skin can burn too, even if it looks less red.

This is general skincare information, not medical advice. Patch test any new product, and see a dermatologist if you have a skin condition.
