Night Cream for Oily Skin: How to Choose and Use One
If your face is shiny by lunchtime, putting more cream on it at night sounds like a terrible idea. Plenty of people with oily skin skip moisturiser for exactly that reason. It usually backfires.
Oil and moisture are not the same thing. Oily skin can still be short of water, and skin that has been dried out often looks shinier, not less. The right night cream for oily skin, used the right way, leaves it calmer and more balanced. Here are six rules that make it work.
Does oily skin really need a night cream?
Yes. Washing your face takes off oil, sweat and sunscreen. It takes off moisture too. If nothing goes back on, your skin feels tight, and by the next afternoon it looks shinier than ever. A light layer of cream at night keeps it comfortable and smoother-looking by morning.
6 rules for a night cream for oily skin
1. Use less than you think you need
This is the one that matters. Half a pea for the whole face. Most of what people blame on a cream comes down to using too much of it.
2. Put it where you need it
Oily skin is hardly ever oily all over. Cheeks and jaw tend to need more than the forehead and nose. Start with the drier parts and use whatever is left on your fingers for the rest.
3. Wash properly first
If you wore sunscreen or make-up, cleanse twice in the evening: an oil-based cleanser, then a gentle face wash. Cream on top of leftover sunscreen and dust is what blocks pores.
4. Look for ingredients that help
- Niacinamide (vitamin B3). A favourite for a smoother, less shiny look.
- Aloe vera. Light and fresh.
- Hyaluronic acid. Hydration with no heaviness.
- Kojic acid. For the look of marks left by pimples.
5. Give it ten minutes
Let the cream settle before your face meets the pillow. It absorbs better, and your pillowcase stays clean.
6. Change with the weather
In humid months, use the thinnest layer you can manage. In winter, or if you sleep with the AC on, oily skin often wants a bit more.
Best night cream for oily skin: how to pick one
There is no single best night face cream for oily skin. The best one is the cream you can use in a thin layer every night without your face feeling heavy. Check these four things before you buy:
- Texture. Light creams and gel-creams are easiest. A richer cream works too, in a very thin layer.
- Ingredients. Niacinamide, aloe vera and hyaluronic acid are good signs. Heavy butters and lots of fragrance are less helpful on oily skin.
- Jar size. Oily skin needs very little cream, so a small jar to start with lets you try a cream without wasting money.
- How your skin feels after a week. Comfortable, not tight, not greasy. That is the only test that counts.
Our picks for oily skin
These are our own creams, so take this as a guide to what each one is like, not an independent ranking:
- Avocado Glow Cream 15g (₹399). The simplest one: avocado and aloe vera only, in a soft whipped cream. A good, low-cost first try for oily skin that just wants a little moisture.
- Avocado Korean Night Cream (25 g, ₹649). Has vitamin B3 (niacinamide), aloe vera and kojic acid in an avocado base. It is creamier, so with oily skin start with half the usual amount every second night.
- Glass Glow Cream (30 g, ₹2,499). A light texture with glutathione, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, centella asiatica and alpha arbutin. Our pick if you also care about an even-looking tone and glow. A pea-sized amount is enough.
Not sure which one? The skin quiz takes a minute.
Can oily skin use a rich cream?
It can, as long as you follow the first two rules. A rich cream in a very thin layer often does better than a watery gel slapped on thickly. Warm it between your fingertips, press it onto the cheeks first, and only then spread what is left over the forehead and nose.
Oily skin in the monsoon and humid months
Humid weather makes oily skin feel greasier, and many people stop using cream completely. Keep going, but use a very thin layer, skip the forehead and nose if they already feel slick, and let the cream settle under a fan for ten minutes before bed. More in the monsoon skin care routine.
What to stay away from
- Skipping moisturiser completely.
- Washing your face more than twice a day.
- Harsh scrubs and toners loaded with alcohol.
- Going to bed in sunscreen or make-up.
A night routine that takes two minutes
- Oil cleanser, then a gel face wash.
- A light, alcohol-free toner.
- Half a pea of night cream, mostly on the cheeks.
For the morning half, open the skincare routine builder and choose the oily option. The application method is in how to apply night cream.
If you break out
A few small spots in the first week can happen with any new product. If they keep coming, use less, switch to every second night, or stop. Acne that will not go away is a medical matter and worth a visit to a dermatologist. There is more in avocado night cream side effects.
