Night Cream for Oily, Acne-Prone Skin: How to Choose One That Will Not Feel Heavy
If your skin is oily and breakout-prone, it is tempting to skip night cream. But dry, over-cleansed skin can make more oil and feel worse. A light night cream used in a small amount can help keep skin comfortable while the rest of your routine does its work.
What to look for
| Choose | Avoid |
|---|---|
| A light gel-cream or lotion that sinks in quickly | Thick balms and heavy butters |
| Niacinamide, which helps skin look more balanced | Heavy fragrance and essential oils if your skin is easily irritated |
| Aloe vera and other light humectants | Several new products at the same time |
| A full ingredient list and batch number | Anything promising to clear acne overnight |
A short, gentle routine
- Cleanse twice a day at most. Use a mild face wash and lukewarm water.
- Treat only as directed. If you use a prescribed acne treatment, follow your dermatologist's instructions.
- Moisturise with a pea-sized amount. Press it in, and use less on the T-zone.
- Wear sunscreen in the morning. Sun makes marks left by pimples darker.
Introduce one new product at a time and give it a few weeks. Our guide on how to patch test a face cream shows how to test safely.
What not to do
- Do not pick or squeeze pimples. It can leave marks that last longer.
- Do not scrub hard or wash many times a day.
- Do not use toothpaste, lemon or home remedies on pimples.
- Do not stack lots of actives at once.
Can night cream cause pimples?
A cream that is too rich for your skin can feel congesting. If you notice new bumps after starting a product, stop and patch test again. We explain more in can night cream cause pimples.

Will night cream clear my acne? No. A night cream is a moisturiser, not a treatment for acne.
When should I see a dermatologist? If acne is painful, deep, scarring or has not improved after a few weeks of gentle care.
