How to Remove Makeup Before Bed: 5 Steps for Indian Skin

To remove makeup before bed, first dissolve it with an oil, cleansing balm or micellar water, then wash with a gentle face wash and lukewarm water, pat dry and apply your night cream. Doing it in two short steps takes about three minutes and gets off sunscreen, kajal and long-wear foundation that a single face wash often leaves behind.

In Indian weather, sweat and pollution sit under the makeup all day, so a proper removal at night matters more than any cream you put on afterwards. Here is how to remove makeup at night without rubbing, what to use for each type of makeup, and what to do on the nights you are too tired.

How to remove makeup before bed: the 5-step method

  1. Eyes and lips first. Soak a cotton pad in micellar water or a little oil, hold it on closed eyes for 10 to 15 seconds, then wipe down and outwards. Do the same for lipstick. Holding, not scrubbing, is what lifts kajal and mascara.
  2. First cleanse: melt the face makeup. Massage a cleansing oil or balm (or a few drops of plain coconut or almond oil if your skin tolerates it) over dry skin for about 30 seconds. On oily skin, micellar water on cotton pads is a lighter option.
  3. Remove the first cleanser. Add a splash of water to turn the oil milky and rinse, or wipe micellar water away with a fresh pad.
  4. Second cleanse: gentle face wash. A pea-sized amount of a mild face wash with lukewarm water, for 20 to 30 seconds. Avoid hot water and strong soap.
  5. Pat dry and moisturise. Pat with a clean towel and apply your night cream within a minute while the skin is still slightly damp. See how to apply night cream for the right amount and order.

Removing makeup at night for oily, dry and sensitive skin

  • Oily or acne-prone skin: micellar water or a light cleansing oil that rinses off fully, then a gentle gel face wash. Follow with a thin layer of a light night cream; read night cream for oily skin.
  • Dry skin: a balm or oil, then a creamy, non-foaming wash. Do not use makeup wipes every night; the rubbing and leftover residue leave dry skin tighter.
  • Sensitive skin: fragrance-free micellar water or a plain oil, very light pressure, and no scrubs or brushes. Patch test any new remover on the jawline first; see how to patch test a face cream.

Common makeup removal mistakes

  • Sleeping in makeup. It sits with sweat, oil and dust all night and can block pores. One night is not a disaster, but make it rare.
  • Rubbing the eyes. Pulling at the thin skin around the eyes is what makes it look tired. Let the remover do the work.
  • Wipes as the only step. Wipes move makeup around and leave residue. Use them only for emergencies, then rinse with water.
  • Hot water or bathing soap on the face. Both strip the skin and leave it tight before you even reach for a cream.
  • Skipping moisturiser because the face "feels clean". Double cleansing removes oil, so the skin needs a cream afterwards, especially in AC rooms and in winter.
  • Using a new active cream on a heavy-makeup night. After a long wedding day, skin is often warm and tired. A plain cream is kinder that night.

What to apply after removing makeup

Your usual night routine starts after removal: an optional serum, then night cream. On a regular night, a cream with gentle actives is fine. After heavy party or bridal makeup, when skin feels warm or tight, pick something simple. Avocado Glow Cream 15 g (₹399) has avocado and aloe vera only and no kojic acid, so it suits those nights. On normal nights, our Avocado Night Cream (₹649) is a richer option for normal to dry skin. You can see all our night creams together.

In the morning, cleanse once, moisturise and use sunscreen, SPF 30 or higher, every day, especially if your night cream contains kojic acid. Our simple night skincare routine shows how the steps fit together.

When you are too tired: the 60-second version

  1. Micellar water on two cotton pads: one for eyes and lips, one for the face.
  2. Splash with lukewarm water to rinse off what is left.
  3. A pea-sized amount of night cream on the face and neck.

It is not as thorough as double cleansing, but it is far better than going to bed in makeup. Keep the micellar water, pads and cream next to the bed or washbasin so the short version is easy.

Wedding season and festival nights

From November to February, long functions mean heavy makeup, setting spray and lashes several nights in a row. Remove false lashes first, gently, starting from the outer corner. Give the eyes an extra soak for waterproof liner. After back-to-back functions, keep your routine plain for a night or two: oil or balm, gentle wash, soothing cream. Short answers

How do I remove makeup before bed without a makeup remover? Use a few drops of plain coconut or almond oil on dry skin, massage, wipe with a damp cotton cloth, then wash with a gentle face wash. Patch test the oil first if your skin is acne-prone or sensitive.

Is micellar water enough to remove makeup? For light makeup and sunscreen, often yes, if you follow it with a water rinse. For long-wear foundation and waterproof kajal, use an oil or balm first and then a face wash.

Should I wash my face after using cleansing oil? Yes. A gentle face wash after the oil removes the leftover film so your night cream can sit on clean skin.

Can I apply night cream right after removing makeup? Yes. Pat dry and apply it within a minute. After heavy makeup, if skin feels warm or tight, use a plain cream that night instead of one with actives.

Is it bad to sleep with makeup on once? One night is unlikely to cause lasting harm, but it can leave skin dull or bumpy. Remove it properly the next morning and keep it a rare event.
