Skin Care After Swimming: A 10-Minute Routine for Chlorine

Skin care after swimming is simple: rinse off pool water within a few minutes, wash with a gentle cleanser, and moisturise while your skin is still a little damp. Chlorine in pool water keeps it clean, but it also dries skin out, so the steps you take in the first 10–15 minutes after you get out make the biggest difference.

Whether you swim at a society pool, a club, a school or for fitness classes, Indian swimmers deal with extra factors: strong sun at outdoor pools, hard water in the showers and a humid commute home. This guide covers what to do before, during and after a swim, for face and body.

Before you swim

  1. Take a quick shower with plain water. Most pools ask for this anyway. Skin that is already wet with fresh water soaks up less pool water.
  2. Apply water-resistant sunscreen SPF 30 or higher if the pool is outdoors, about 15–20 minutes before you get in. Cover the face, ears, neck, shoulders and back.
  3. A thin layer of moisturiser on very dry areas, such as elbows and shins, can help. Keep the face light so goggles sit well.
  4. Skip makeup and strong actives before a swim. Leave acids and retinol for nights when you are not swimming the next morning.

The 10-minute routine after swimming

  1. Rinse straight away. Do not wait until you get home. Rinse face and body in the pool shower for a minute or two.
  2. Wash with a gentle cleanser. Use a mild face wash on the face and a gentle body wash on the body. Lukewarm water, not hot.
  3. Pat dry with a clean towel. Do not rub hard; leave the skin slightly damp.
  4. Moisturise within a few minutes. A light moisturiser on the face, body lotion on arms and legs, and extra on elbows, knees and heels.
  5. Sunscreen again if you are heading out in the day.
  6. Lip balm for lips that feel dry after the pool.

If the pool showers use hard borewell or tanker water, a final splash from a bottle of filtered water on the face can feel more comfortable. Our guide on hard water skin care has more tips.

Night routine on swim days

Swim days are the days to focus on comfort and moisture.

  • Cleanse gently at night, even if you washed after swimming.
  • Apply a pea-sized amount of night cream on slightly damp skin, plus the neck. A cream suits pool-dry skin better than a gel. Read how to moisturise skin overnight for the method.
  • For dry or normal skin, a nourishing option is our Avocado Night Cream (₹649), with avocado, aloe vera, vitamin B3 and kojic acid. Use sunscreen every morning when you use kojic acid, especially before an outdoor swim.
  • If your skin feels sensitive after the pool, choose a plain cream with no strong actives, like Avocado Glow Cream 15 g (₹399), which has avocado and aloe vera only.
  • Pause exfoliating scrubs and acids on nights when your skin feels tight or stings.

You can compare all our night creams here.

Swimming with oily, acne-prone or sensitive skin

  • Oily or acne-prone skin: chlorine dries the surface, but oily skin may then make more oil. Keep moisturising with a light, non-greasy product rather than skipping it. Our moisturiser for acne-prone skin guide explains what to look for.
  • Sensitive skin: rinse quickly, avoid fragranced body washes right after a swim and keep your routine short. See our skincare routine for sensitive skin.
  • Kids who swim: a quick rinse, a gentle body wash and a plain moisturiser is enough. Avoid adult active creams on children.

Outdoor pools and the Indian sun

Water reflects sunlight, and sunscreen comes off when you swim and towel dry, even if it says water-resistant. Swim before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m. when you can, reapply sunscreen after the swim, and wear a rash guard for long sessions. If you already have tan lines, our guide to skincare after sun exposure covers a calm routine. A tan usually takes several weeks to look more even with daily sunscreen; there is no overnight fix.

When to see a doctor

See a dermatologist or doctor if you get an itchy rash with bumps after every swim, red scaly patches that do not settle with moisturiser, blisters, or a rash with fever. Some people react to pool chemicals, and some skin infections spread in shared wet areas. A cream will not fix these.

Short answers

What should I apply on my face after swimming? Rinse, wash with a gentle face wash, then apply a moisturiser on slightly damp skin. Add sunscreen if you are going out in the day.

Does chlorine damage skin? Chlorine mainly dries the skin and can make it itchy, especially with regular swimming. Rinsing quickly and moisturising after every swim keeps most people comfortable.

Should I use sunscreen for indoor swimming? Not needed for a fully indoor pool, but use it for any outdoor or semi-open pool, and reapply after swimming.

Can I use night cream after swimming in the evening? Yes. Wash off pool water first, then apply a pea-sized amount on slightly damp skin. Choose a plain cream if your skin feels sensitive that night.

Why does my skin itch after swimming? Usually dryness from chlorine plus a hot shower. Rinse soon after, use lukewarm water and moisturise. If the itch comes with a rash or bumps every time, see a doctor.
