Skin Care for Delhi Weather: A Season-by-Season Routine for Heat, Smog and Cold

Skin care for Delhi weather means changing your routine with the season: light layers and strong sunscreen in the dry summer heat, gentle cleansing in the humid monsoon, and a richer moisturiser plus a careful night cleanse in the smoggy, cold months from November to January. Delhi swings between extremes more than most Indian cities, so one routine all year usually leaves skin either greasy or dry and tight.

Add hard water in many areas, long commutes in traffic, smoke and dust in the air, and room heaters in winter, and it is easy to see why so many people in Delhi NCR say their skin "never feels normal". Here is a simple plan you can follow month by month.

What Delhi weather does to your skin, season by season

Months (roughly)WeatherWhat skin usually feels likeSmall change that helps
April to JuneVery hot, dry, loo winds, harsh sunTan, dehydrated skin that still gets oily, heat rashLight moisturiser, sunscreen reapplied, cool (not cold) water
July to SeptemberMonsoon, humid and stickyShiny T-zone, sweat bumps, damp skin foldsGel or thin cream, gentle face wash, dry skin fully after rain
October to NovemberCooling, smoke and smog spells, dusty airDull-looking, rough, more sensitive skinProper night cleanse, no harsh scrubs, keep moisturiser on
December to JanuaryCold, foggy mornings, very dry air, heatersTight cheeks, flaky patches, dry lips and nose cornersRicher night cream, lukewarm water, lip balm
February to MarchPleasant spring, sun getting strongerSkin settles, tan starts again on outdoor daysStep down to a lighter cream, keep sunscreen daily

The key idea: keep the same few products, but change the texture and amount. You do not need a new 8-step routine every season.

Skin care for Delhi weather in smog season (October to January)

This is when Delhi skin struggles most. Smoke and fine dust settle on the face through the day, the air gets drier, and many people wash harder to "get the pollution off", which mainly strips the skin.

  1. Cleanse well at night, not harshly. Use a mild face wash and lukewarm water. If you wore sunscreen or makeup, cleanse twice. Skip daily scrubs and peel-off masks; rough skin needs less friction, not more.
  2. Moisturise within a minute of drying while the skin is still slightly damp.
  3. Keep sunscreen on, even on hazy grey days. Smog does not block enough UV to skip it.
  4. Wear a mask outdoors when air quality is poor, with a thin moisturiser underneath so the edges do not rub. Our guide on skin care while wearing a face mask explains how.

For more detail on dust and smoke, read our skincare for air pollution in India guide. If you have asthma or breathing trouble on bad-air days, please follow your doctor's advice first; skincare comes second.

Delhi winter: cold, fog, heaters and hot water

From mid-December, mornings are cold and foggy and the indoor air is dry, especially with a room heater on for hours. Long, very hot baths feel good but leave skin tighter afterwards.

  • Bathe with warm, not hot, water and keep it short. Moisturise face and body straight after.
  • Keep at least an arm's length from heaters and blowers, and do not sit with your face towards one. See our room heater skin care guide for safe use and an angithi warning.
  • Use a slightly richer night cream than in summer, in a thin layer. Our night cream for dry skin in winter guide shows how to choose one.
  • Dab a little extra cream on flaky spots around the nose and mouth. If that area cracks or crusts often, read dry skin around the nose.
  • Use lip balm through the day; licking dry lips makes them worse.

A cream like our Avocado Night Cream (30 g, ₹649) with avocado, aloe vera, vitamin B3 and kojic acid suits the night step in Delhi winters. Because it has kojic acid, use sunscreen every morning and patch test it on your jawline first.

Delhi summer: dry heat and strong sun (April to June)

Delhi summers are hot and dry rather than sticky, so skin often loses water quickly while the forehead still gets shiny from sweat. Heavy creams feel uncomfortable, but skipping moisturiser altogether usually leaves skin feeling rough by evening.

  • Switch to a light, quick-absorbing moisturiser in the morning. Our Avocado Glow Cream 15 g (₹399) has only avocado and aloe vera, with no kojic acid, so it is easy to wear under sunscreen.
  • Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher sunscreen and reapply before going out again after lunch.
  • Cover up on two-wheelers and at bus stops with a cap, dupatta or scarf, and carry water.
  • At night, use half the amount of night cream you use in winter.

Our summer skincare routine for India covers heat rash, tan and sweat in more depth.

Monsoon months: July to September

Once the rains arrive, Delhi turns humid. Skin feels oilier, and damp clothes and wet commutes cause small bumps and irritation in folds.

  • Wash and dry your face fully after getting caught in rain, then moisturise lightly.
  • Change damp clothes and socks quickly and keep the neck and underarms dry.
  • Keep sunscreen on through cloudy days.

The monsoon skincare routine has the full rainy-season plan.

Hard water, commutes and AC offices

Many Delhi NCR homes use groundwater or tanker water that is hard, which can leave skin feeling squeaky and tight after washing. Use lukewarm water, a gentle face wash and moisturise quickly; our hard water skincare guide has more simple fixes.

Long drives and metro or bus commutes mean hours of dust and sun through windows, then cold office AC. Keep a small desk kit: a light moisturiser, sunscreen for the trip home, a lip balm and a soft tissue to blot shine instead of washing again.

A simple year-round Delhi routine

  1. Morning: gentle face wash, moisturiser (lighter in summer, richer in winter), sunscreen.
  2. Evening: cleanse off smoke, sweat and sunscreen properly.
  3. Night: a thin layer of night cream on clean skin. You can compare options on our night creams page.

Expect smoother, more comfortable skin within a couple of weeks of a steady routine. A more even-looking tone takes longer, usually 8 to 12 weeks with daily sunscreen. See a dermatologist if you get itchy red patches, painful pimples, or dark patches that keep spreading.

Short answers

Which moisturiser is best for Delhi weather? A light, quick-absorbing moisturiser suits Delhi summers and the monsoon, while a slightly richer cream helps in the dry, cold months from December to January.

How do I protect my skin from Delhi pollution? Cleanse gently but thoroughly every night, keep moisturiser and sunscreen on, wear a mask outdoors on bad-air days and avoid harsh scrubs.

Do I need sunscreen in Delhi winter? Yes. Foggy or smoggy days still let UV through, so apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning.

Why does my face feel tight after bathing in Delhi? Hot water, hard water and dry winter air all pull moisture from skin. Use lukewarm water and moisturise within a minute of drying.

Can I use the same night cream all year in Delhi? Usually yes. Use a thin layer in summer and the monsoon, and a little more on dry areas in winter.

This is general skincare information, not medical advice. Patch test any new product, and see a dermatologist if you have a skin condition.
