Skin Care While Wearing a Face Mask All Day: Smog Season Guide

Skin care while wearing a face mask all day starts with a clean, well-fitting mask and a thin layer of moisturiser under it, applied a few minutes before you put the mask on. Take short mask breaks in safe, clean air, change or wash the mask daily, and cleanse gently at night to deal with the sweat, oil and rubbing that build up under it.

In winter many Indians go back to masks: N95s on high-AQI days in Delhi and north India, cloth or surgical masks on dusty commutes, and masks at work in hospitals, kitchens and factories. This guide is only about your skin. For whether and which mask to wear for your lungs, follow your doctor and local health advice.

What a mask does to your skin

Under the maskWhat you may noticeWhat helps
Warm, humid breath trapped for hoursSticky, oily feel; small bumps on the chin, cheeks or around the mouthLight moisturiser, mask breaks, a clean mask every day
Rubbing at the edgesRed lines or rough skin on the nose bridge and cheeksGood fit, a thin cream on pressure spots
Tight N95 seal and ear loopsMarks on the nose and sore skin behind the earsShort breaks, headband or ear-saver style straps
Dry winter air outside the maskFlaky skin on the upper cheeks and around the noseMoisturiser morning and night, lip balm

A simple routine for mask days

Morning

  1. Wash with a gentle face wash. Skip harsh scrubs on mask days.
  2. Apply a thin layer of moisturiser and let it sink in for 5 to 10 minutes. A heavy, greasy layer under a mask can feel suffocating, so use less than usual.
  3. Apply sunscreen on the parts of the face the mask does not cover, plus the nose bridge if your mask sits low.
  4. Keep makeup off the mask area. Foundation under a mask rubs off and mixes with sweat.
  5. Put on a clean, dry mask with clean hands.

During the day

  1. When you are indoors in clean air or alone, remove the mask for a few minutes every few hours to let the skin breathe and dry.
  2. If the skin feels sweaty, blot gently with a clean tissue. Do not rub.
  3. Carry a spare mask; change it if it gets wet with sweat or breath.

Night

  1. Cleanse gently to remove sweat, oil, sunscreen and the day's dust.
  2. Apply your night cream. Our night creams are made for this step; use a pea-sized amount.
  3. Put a little extra cream on sore spots on the nose bridge or behind the ears.

Mask breakouts (maskne): what to do

Bumps along the chin and jaw under a mask usually come from heat, sweat, oil and friction together. Keep the routine light rather than piling on products:

  • Use a gel-light or thin cream moisturiser instead of oils or heavy balms under the mask.
  • Do not start new strong actives during a heavy mask week. Bring them in one at a time later.
  • Wash cloth masks after every use in mild detergent and rinse well; strong fragrance left in fabric can irritate.
  • Do not pick or squeeze bumps under the mask.

Our guides on moisturiser for acne-prone skin and whether night cream can cause pimples go deeper. If bumps are painful, deep or keep spreading, see a dermatologist.

Marks on the nose and behind the ears

A snug N95 needs a firm seal, so some pressure is normal. To reduce marks:

  • Choose a size that fits your face, and shape the metal nose strip gently with both hands rather than pinching hard.
  • Use masks with head straps, or an ear-saver clip, if ear loops make the skin behind your ears sore.
  • Moisturise pressure spots at night so the skin stays supple.
  • If you also wear glasses, the nose bridge takes double pressure. Our guide on spectacle marks on the nose has tips that help here too.

Do not cut or loosen a mask's seal just to protect your skin if you need it for health reasons. Fit and care for the skin instead.

Which mask and which cream for your skin type

Skin typeUnder the maskAt night
Oily or acne-proneVery thin, light moisturiser; blot sweatGentle cleanse, light night cream
DryThin cream, extra on cheeks above the maskRicher layer of night cream, lip balm
SensitiveFragrance-free products, soft cotton layer for cloth masksSimple, gentle cream; patch test new products
CombinationLight cream on the T-zone, a bit more on dry cheeksNight cream, more on dry areas

A gentle option for mask days is our Avocado Glow Cream 15 g (₹399), which has avocado and aloe vera only and no kojic acid, so it is easy to use under a mask in the day. Not sure of your type? See how to identify your skin type.

Smog season: masks plus a pollution routine

From late October to January, many north Indian cities have high-AQI days, and Diwali smoke adds to it. On those days the mask covers part of the face, but your forehead, eyes and upper cheeks are still exposed to dust and smoke. Cleansing well at night matters more than any special product. Our skincare for air pollution guide covers the full routine, and winter skincare in India covers dry-season care.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Wearing the same cloth mask for several days without washing it.
  • A thick layer of oil or petroleum jelly under the mask on a hot, humid day.
  • Touching the mask and then your face again and again without clean hands.
  • Scrubbing the chin hard at night to "clean out" bumps.
  • Skipping sunscreen on the uncovered parts of the face.

When to see a doctor

See a dermatologist if you get a rash that spreads, burning or itching that does not settle after you change mask type, painful or pus-filled bumps, or broken skin on the nose bridge. Patch test any new cream first; our patch test guide shows how.

Short answers

Should I apply moisturiser before wearing a mask? Yes, a thin layer, and give it 5 to 10 minutes to sink in before you put the mask on.

Why do I get pimples under my mask? Trapped heat, sweat, oil and rubbing together can clog pores. A clean mask daily, a lighter moisturiser and gentle cleansing usually help.

Can I wear makeup under a mask? It is better to skip foundation under the mask; it rubs off, mixes with sweat and can clog pores.

How often should I wash a cloth mask? After every use, in mild detergent, rinsed well and fully dried.

Do I need sunscreen if I wear a mask? Yes, on the parts the mask does not cover, such as the forehead, upper cheeks and nose bridge.

This is general skincare information, not medical advice. Patch test any new product, and see a dermatologist if you have a skin condition.
