How to Identify Your Skin Type: 3 Simple At-Home Tests
The easiest way to identify your skin type is the bare-face test: wash with a mild cleanser, pat dry, apply nothing, and check your skin after about an hour. Shine all over means oily, tightness or flakes mean dry, shine only on the forehead, nose and chin means combination, and comfortable skin with little shine means normal. If your skin often stings or goes red, it is also sensitive.
Knowing how to identify your skin type saves money and frustration, because texture choices (gel or cream, light or rich) depend on it. Below are simple at-home tests, a quick guide to each type, and a starter morning and night routine for each one.
How to identify your skin type: the 5 common types
| Skin type | How it usually looks and feels |
|---|---|
| Oily | Shiny all over by midday, visible pores, makeup slides off |
| Dry | Tight after washing, fine flakes, small pores, rarely shiny |
| Combination | Oily T-zone (forehead, nose, chin), normal or dry cheeks |
| Normal | Comfortable most of the day, a little shine by evening |
| Sensitive | Reacts easily with stinging, redness or bumps; can overlap with any type |
Sensitive is better thought of as a "plus" on top of another type. You can have oily sensitive skin or dry sensitive skin.
Test 1: the bare-face (wash and wait) test
- Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water.
- Pat dry with a clean towel. Do not apply toner, cream or sunscreen.
- Stay indoors, away from a fan blowing on your face, for about an hour.
- Look in natural light and notice how your skin feels.
- Shiny forehead, nose, chin and cheeks → oily.
- Tight, rough or flaky, no shine → dry.
- Shiny T-zone, normal or tight cheeks → combination.
- Comfortable, maybe slight shine on the nose → normal.
Test 2: the blotting paper test
After the bare-face test, press a clean blotting paper (or a piece of tissue) gently on different areas: forehead, nose, each cheek and chin. Hold it up to the light.
- Oil spots from every area → oily.
- Almost nothing anywhere → dry.
- Oil from the T-zone only → combination.
- A little oil from the nose and forehead → normal.
Test 3: notice how your skin behaves over a week
One test on one day can mislead you, especially in Indian weather where humidity changes a lot. For a week, notice:
- How your face feels 30 minutes after washing (tight or fine?).
- How shiny you are by lunchtime and by evening.
- Whether new products sting, itch or cause redness.
- Whether your skin changes a lot in AC, in sun or after a hot shower.
Write it down. Patterns tell you more than one look in the mirror. Our free skin quiz turns these questions into a quick answer in under a minute.
Things that can confuse the result
- Season: skin is oilier in summer and monsoon, drier in winter. Your type can shift a little by season.
- Dehydration: oily skin can feel tight if it is short on water, often after harsh face washes. That is dehydration, not dry skin.
- Products: strong cleansers, scrubs or acids can make any skin feel dry or sensitive for a while.
- Hormones and age: skin often gets less oily over the years, and can change around periods or pregnancy.
- Hard water and AC: both can leave skin feeling drier than it really is.
A starter routine for each skin type
| Type | Morning | Night |
|---|---|---|
| Oily | Gel face wash, gel moisturiser, gel sunscreen | Face wash, thin light cream |
| Dry | Cream cleanser or water, cream moisturiser, cream sunscreen | Gentle cleanser, richer night cream on damp skin |
| Combination | Gel face wash, light moisturiser (more on cheeks), sunscreen | Face wash, cream on cheeks, leftover on T-zone |
| Normal | Mild face wash, light cream, sunscreen | Face wash, medium cream |
| Sensitive | Water rinse, simple fragrance-free cream, mineral sunscreen | Gentle cleanser, the same simple cream |

Where to start with Mirc Glow
If you are still working out your skin type, start small. Our Avocado Glow Cream 10 g (₹349) is made for first-time buyers, so you can patch test and see how your skin likes a cream before buying a bigger jar. If you already know you want a full routine, the Day & Night Combo pairs a small day jar with a 30 g night cream. Both contain kojic acid, so use sunscreen every morning. You can also browse every night cream we make.
See a dermatologist if your skin is very reactive, has rashes, patches, persistent redness or painful acne. A professional can tell skin types apart from conditions like eczema or rosacea, which need proper care.

Short answers
How can I check my skin type at home? Wash, pat dry, apply nothing and check after an hour; then press blotting paper on your forehead, nose and cheeks to see where oil shows.
Can my skin type change? Yes, a little. Season, age, hormones and products can make skin oilier or drier over time.
Is sensitive skin a separate skin type? It is better seen as an extra trait. Oily, dry, combination or normal skin can also be sensitive.
Why does my oily skin feel tight? It may be dehydrated from harsh cleansing or AC. A gentler face wash and a light moisturiser usually help.
Is there a quick online test? Yes, our skin quiz asks a few simple questions and suggests a routine.
