Ingredients to Look for in a Night Cream: A Simple Guide

The ingredients to look for in a night cream depend on your main goal: moisturisers such as hyaluronic acid and plant oils for dryness, niacinamide for the skin barrier, and ingredients like alpha arbutin or kojic acid for a more even-looking tone. A good night cream usually combines a moisturising base with one or two targeted ingredients.

This guide gives you a simple way to read a label, compare night cream ingredients side by side, and choose what suits your skin.

Start with your goal, not the trend

Before you read any ingredient list, decide what you want your night cream to do. Most people fall into one of these groups:

  • Comfort and moisture: skin feels tight, dry or rough.
  • A more even-looking tone: dark spots, old acne marks or patchiness.
  • Calm and balance: skin gets red or reacts easily.
  • Smoother-looking texture: fine lines or rough patches.

Not sure which group you are in? The skin quiz can help you narrow it down.

Night cream with niacinamide

Niacinamide is one of the easiest ingredients to live with. It supports the skin barrier, can help skin look more even, and suits oily, dry and combination skin alike. That is why a night cream with niacinamide is a safe first choice for many people.

Most Mirc Glow creams contain niacinamide, including our Avocado Korean Night Cream (₹649), which pairs it with avocado, aloe vera and kojic acid.

Night cream with hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid holds water in the top layer of skin, so skin looks plumper and feels softer. A night cream with hyaluronic acid is helpful if you sleep with the AC on or your skin feels tight by evening. Apply it to slightly damp skin for the best feel.

Night cream with alpha arbutin or kojic acid

Both are popular for a more even-looking tone. They are often compared:

  • Alpha arbutin is usually described as gentle and suits people who want a slow, steady approach.
  • Kojic acid is well known for the look of dark spots, but some sensitive skin finds it stronger, so patch testing matters.

With either, sunscreen every morning is essential, and you should give it 8–12 weeks. A night cream with alpha arbutin is the Glass Glow Cream (₹2,499), which also contains hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, glutathione and centella asiatica. For kojic acid, read kojic acid cream for dark spots, and for how it compares with glutathione, see kojic acid vs glutathione.

How to compare night cream ingredients on a label

  1. Read the full list, not the front of the jar. The front shows the highlights; the back shows everything.
  2. Check the order. Ingredients are usually listed from most to least. Something listed near the very end is present in small amounts.
  3. Count the actives. One or two targeted ingredients is plenty. More is not always better.
  4. Look for fragrance if your skin is sensitive, and patch test anything new.
  5. Check what is not there. If you want retinol, peptides or ceramides, make sure they are actually listed. Mirc Glow creams, for example, do not contain any of these three.
  6. Match texture to weather. Lighter for summer and monsoon, richer for winter.

How to choose skincare ingredients without overdoing it

Knowing the ingredients to look for in a night cream is only half the job. Using them sensibly matters just as much.

  • Introduce one new active at a time, and wait 2–4 weeks before adding another.
  • Do not stack several brightening-focused products on the same night.
  • Keep a plain moisturiser on hand for days your skin feels irritated.
  • Remember that sunscreen does more for an even-looking tone than any extra cream.

Our guide on choosing the best night cream for glowing skin covers texture, price and skin type, and how to apply night cream covers the technique. You can browse our full night cream range with ingredients listed on each product page.

Ingredients to be careful with

  • Strong exfoliating acids on the same night as kojic acid or retinol.
  • Heavy fragrance if your skin reacts easily.
  • Unlabelled creams or creams promising dramatic changes in skin colour. Steroid-containing creams sold without a prescription can harm skin.

If you have melasma, painful acne, a rash or are pregnant, ask a dermatologist which ingredients are suitable for you.
