Kojic Acid Cream for Dark Spots: How to Use It and What to Expect
Ask anyone in India what they use for marks and tan, and sooner or later someone says kojic acid. Kojic acid cream for dark spots is easy to find, simple to use and has been around for decades. What people are rarely told is that it works slowly, and that without sunscreen it barely works at all.
Here is how to use it well and what to expect.
One caution first. This is general information about cosmetic skincare. Dark patches sometimes have a medical cause, such as melasma. If yours are spreading, changing, or not responding to care, please see a dermatologist.
What is kojic acid?
It is made by certain fungi during fermentation, and it has been used for many years in products meant for the look of dark spots, tan and uneven tone. Most creams contain around one to two percent. There is more in our skincare ingredient glossary.
What do people use it for?
- Marks left behind after pimples.
- Uneven tone from sun and tanning.
- Darker-looking areas around the mouth or on the forehead.
- Skin that just looks dull.
A cosmetic cream can improve how these look. It does not treat pigmentation conditions.
How to use kojic acid cream for dark spots
- Patch test. A little behind the ear, then wait a day.
- Cleanse. Wash your face and pat it dry.
- A thin layer. A pea for the whole face, or dab it on the areas that bother you.
- Go slowly. Every second night for two weeks, then nightly if your skin is comfortable.
- Moisturise. If the cream is light, follow it with a moisturiser. A rich cream that already contains kojic acid does both.
- Sunscreen every morning. This one is not optional.
How long will it take?
Skin often feels smoother within a couple of weeks. A visible difference in how even your tone looks usually takes eight to twelve weeks of nightly use. Fresh marks fade from view sooner than old, deep-looking ones.
7 tips that improve your odds
- SPF 30 or higher every day, cloudy days included.
- Leave pimples alone. Picking is what leaves the marks.
- No harsh scrubs while you are using kojic acid.
- Keep the rest of your routine gentle.
- Take a photo every two weeks.
- Do not skip nights.
- Pair it with supportive ingredients such as vitamin B3 or vitamin C.
Possible side effects
Some people get redness, dryness or itching, especially with sensitive skin. If that happens, cut back to twice a week. If it burns, or you get a rash, stop completely. Our article on avocado night cream side effects covers creams that contain kojic acid.
What goes well with it
- Vitamin B3 (niacinamide). Gentle, and good for a smooth, even-looking tone.
- Vitamin C. For radiance.
- Glutathione. A common partner. See kojic acid vs glutathione.
- Something nourishing. Rich ingredients such as avocado help with the dryness.

Be careful with fast-result creams
If a cream promises to remove dark spots in a few days, be suspicious. Some such products have been found to contain steroids or other ingredients that are not permitted in cosmetics. Choose a product with a full ingredient list and a named manufacturer.
