Does Night Cream Expire? Shelf Life, PAO and Storage

Does night cream expire? Yes. Every jar has two limits: the use-before or expiry date printed on the pack, which applies while the jar is sealed, and the period after opening (PAO), shown as a small open-jar symbol with a number such as 6M or 12M, which tells you how many months it stays good once opened. Use the cream until whichever of the two comes first.

After that, or sooner if the cream smells, looks or feels different, throw it away. Here is how to read the dates, spot a cream that has gone off, and store face cream so it lasts in Indian heat and humidity.

For Mirc Glow creams, check the use-before date and the PAO symbol on your pack. We do not give a single shelf life for all creams, because the date that matters is the one printed on your jar.

How to read the PAO symbol

The PAO symbol looks like a small jar with its lid open. The number inside or next to it, followed by "M", is the number of months.

  1. When you open a new jar, write the date on the lid or base with a marker, or on a small piece of tape.
  2. Add the PAO months. Opened on 10 November with a 6M symbol means use it by about 10 May.
  3. Compare that with the use-before date. If the use-before date is earlier, that date wins.

Writing the date down sounds fussy, but most people cannot remember when they opened a jar three months ago.

Night cream shelf life: why creams go off

  • Water and germs. Most night creams contain water, and preservatives keep them safe for a set time. Every dip of a finger adds a few more germs and a little moisture, so an opened jar ages faster than a sealed one.
  • Air and heat. Plant oils and butters, such as avocado, can slowly turn rancid when they meet air and warmth.
  • Light. Some actives are sensitive to light and heat. Kojic acid and vitamin C, for example, can darken over time.
  • Humidity. In the monsoon, a damp jar rim or wet fingers make mould more likely.

An expired cream is not just weaker. Its preservatives may no longer protect it, which is why using it on your face is not worth the risk.

Signs your night cream has gone off

  • Smell: sour, stale, crayon-like or "off" compared with when you opened it.
  • Colour: noticeably darker, yellow or brown patches, or a dark ring at the top.
  • Texture: watery layer on top, separation that does not mix back, lumps, graininess or a slimy feel.
  • Visible spots: any fuzzy, green, grey or black specks. Throw the jar away straight away.
  • Your skin: stinging, redness or bumps from a cream that used to feel fine.

If you notice any of these, stop using it, even if the date has not passed. Do not test a doubtful cream on your face to "check". If skin reacts, see night cream side effects for what is normal and what is not.

How to store face cream in Indian weather

  • Keep it cool and shaded. A bedroom cupboard or drawer works well. Avoid a dressing table in direct sun from a window.
  • Not in the bathroom. Steam from hot showers and damp air shorten a cream's life.
  • Not in a parked car, scooter dicky or a handbag in summer. These get very hot during the day.
  • Close the lid tightly after every use, and keep the inner seal disc if your jar has one.
  • Use clean, dry fingers or a small spatula. Never dip in with wet fingers, and never add water or rose water to a jar to "loosen" it.
  • Wipe the rim with a clean tissue if cream builds up there, especially in the monsoon.
  • Do not share the jar. Each extra set of fingers adds germs.
  • A fridge is not needed unless the pack says so. Moving a jar between a cold fridge and a warm room every day can cause condensation inside.

Buying ahead and unopened jars

A sealed jar kept cool and shaded is fine until its use-before date. If you stock up for festivals or gifting, check the dates when the parcel arrives and open the oldest jar first.

The bigger risk is a jar you open, use for a few weeks and then forget. At a pea-sized amount every night, a 30 g jar is usually finished in about 6 to 8 weeks, well inside most PAO periods. Our guide on how long a jar of night cream lasts gives the figure for each size, and how much night cream to use helps you get the amount right.

Trying a cream for the first time? A small jar, such as the Avocado Glow Nourishing Skin Cream 10 g (₹349), means you are not left with half a big jar ageing in a drawer if it does not suit you. Every jar should arrive sealed; our guide to checking an original avocado night cream explains what to look for, and unopened, sealed jars can be returned within 7 days under our returns policy.

Salons and bulk tubs

Large tubs are opened many times a day, so hygiene matters more. Scoop with a clean spatula, never fingers, decant a week's worth into a small clean container, and keep the main tub closed and away from steamers and sunny windows. Write the opening date on the lid. Our bulk night cream page covers supply from 1 kg.

You can browse every jar size on our night cream page.

Short answers

Can I use expired night cream? It is best not to. Preservatives and actives may no longer work as intended, and the risk of irritation goes up.

What does 12M mean on a cream? It is the PAO symbol: the cream stays good for about 12 months after opening, unless the use-before date comes first.

How do I know if face cream has gone bad? A changed smell, darker colour, separation, lumps, specks of mould or new stinging are all signs to throw it away.

Should I keep night cream in the fridge? Not usually. A cool, shaded cupboard is enough unless the pack says otherwise.

How long does an unopened night cream last? Until the use-before or expiry date on the pack, if it is stored cool and away from sunlight.
