Night Cream After Waxing or Threading: What to Use and When
Night cream after waxing or threading is fine, as long as it is a plain, soothing one. Skip creams with kojic acid, glutathione, vitamin C, alpha arbutin, retinol or exfoliating acids on freshly waxed, threaded or bleached skin for about 24 to 48 hours, and use a simple, fragrance-free moisturiser on those areas instead. Once the redness and prickly feeling have gone, go back to your usual cream.
Facial hair removal, whether threading, waxing, face bleach or a hair removal cream, leaves skin open, warm and quick to sting. Here is a simple plan for the first two days, area by area.
Why actives sting after waxing and threading
Threading pulls each hair from the root, which leaves the skin around the brows and upper lip red and a little swollen for a few hours. Waxing goes further: along with the hair, it lifts a thin layer of the skin's surface. Face bleach and hair removal creams are chemical processes that can leave skin tingly for a day or so.
On that skin, an active night cream behaves as if it were much stronger. Kojic acid, alpha arbutin, glutathione and vitamin C are comfortable for most people on a normal night, but on freshly worked skin they can cause burning, redness or small bumps. A short break avoids that. For parlour facials, peels and clean-ups, see our separate guide to night cream after a facial.
Night cream after waxing and threading: timing by area
These are cautious, general timings. If your beautician gave you aftercare advice, follow that first, and let comfort rather than the clock decide.
| What you had done | That night | Back to an active night cream |
|---|---|---|
| Eyebrow threading | Usual cream on the face, but keep it off the brows | About 24 hours on the brow area |
| Upper lip or chin threading | Plain moisturiser on the area once redness fades | About 24 hours |
| Upper lip, chin or side wax | Plain moisturiser only, after a few hours | 24 to 48 hours |
| Full face wax | Plain moisturiser only, a thin layer | About 48 hours |
| Face bleach | Plain moisturiser only, if skin feels calm | About 48 hours |
| Hair removal cream on the face | Plain moisturiser only | 24 to 48 hours |
| Underarm, arm or leg wax | Nothing, or a plain moisturiser | 24 to 48 hours before any kojic acid cream there |
If splashing the area with plain water still stings, wait another day.
The first 48 hours, step by step
- Right after: press a clean cloth soaked in cool water, or an ice cube wrapped in a thin cloth, on the area for a few minutes. Never put ice straight on the skin.
- First few hours: hands off. No makeup, no scrubbing, no perfumed products on the area.
- That evening: rinse with cool or lukewarm water only. Skip your face wash on the waxed or threaded area if it still feels tender.
- That night: a thin layer of a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser on the area. Your usual night cream can go on untouched areas, such as the cheeks after brow threading.
- Next morning: gentle wash, plain moisturiser, then sunscreen. Freshly waxed skin can be more sensitive to sun.
- After 24 to 48 hours: when the skin looks and feels normal, bring back your active cream, every second night for the first few nights.
What to use, and what to skip
Good choices
- A plain moisturiser without fragrance, alcohol or actives.
- A little plain aloe vera gel, if it does not sting.
- Our Avocado Glow Cream 15 g (₹399), which is avocado and aloe vera only, with no kojic acid. Patch test it on a normal day first, not on freshly waxed skin.
Skip for 24 to 48 hours
- Creams with kojic acid, glutathione, vitamin C, alpha arbutin or niacinamide-heavy serums.
- Retinol, AHAs, BHAs and any peeling product.
- Scrubs, face brushes and rough towels.
- Toners with alcohol, perfume and body mists.
- Steam, saunas, sweaty workouts, swimming pools and long hot showers.
- Strong sun without sunscreen.
Most of our creams count as active here. Avocado Night Cream, Avocado Korean Night Cream, Avocado Glow Nourishing Skin Cream 10 g and Glutathione Cream all contain kojic acid, and Glass Glow Cream contains glutathione and alpha arbutin. You can check each one's ingredients on the night cream page.
Bumps, redness and ingrown hairs
- Small red dots around each hair: normal after threading and waxing. They usually settle within a few hours to a day.
- Little whitehead-like bumps: common if the area was touched, sweaty or covered with heavy cream. Do not pick them. Keep the area clean and use only a thin layer of moisturiser.
- Ingrown hairs a few days later: keep moisturising the area. Once it has fully settled, gentle exfoliation a few days apart can help, but never on fresh wax.
Stop and see a dermatologist if you notice blisters, burns from hot wax, skin that has lifted or looks raw, swelling, pus or pain that gets worse. If you use retinoids or prescription creams, tell your beautician before waxing; it is sensible to pause strong actives for a few days before facial waxing, and ask your doctor about prescription ones.
Planning waxing around your night cream
- Book waxing and threading early in the week of an event, not the day before, so skin has two or three days to settle.
- Skip your active night cream the night before a full face wax or bleach. It gives skin a calmer start.
- Do not stack services. Threading, waxing, bleach and a facial in one sitting is a lot for sensitive skin.
- Restart slowly. Our guide on how to introduce active ingredients explains the every-second-night approach.
If your skin often reacts after parlour visits, night cream for sensitive skin has more tips, and kojic acid side effects explains what normal tingling looks like compared with irritation.
Short answers
Can I apply night cream after waxing? A plain, fragrance-free moisturiser, yes. Wait 24 to 48 hours before using a cream with kojic acid, glutathione or other actives on the waxed area.
Can I apply night cream after threading? Yes on the rest of your face. Keep active creams off the threaded area for about 24 hours.
How long after face bleach can I use night cream? Use only a plain moisturiser for about 48 hours, then bring back your usual cream if skin feels calm.
Is aloe vera gel good after threading? A little plain aloe gel is fine for most people, as long as it does not sting.
Why do I get pimples after waxing? Usually from touching, sweat or heavy products on freshly opened follicles. Keep the area clean and use a thin layer of moisturiser.
