Oily Skin in Winter: Why It Feels Dry and the Routine That Helps

Oily skin in winter still needs moisture, often more than in summer. Cold air and heaters dry out the surface, so skin can feel tight and flaky while the T-zone keeps producing oil. The fix is to cleanse more gently, add a light layer of hydration, and switch from a gel to a light cream at night, without going heavy.

This guide explains why oily skin behaves differently in the cold, a simple morning and night routine, which ingredients help, and the mistakes that make winter shine and flaking worse at the same time.

Why oily skin can feel dry in winter

Oil and water are two different things. Oily skin makes plenty of sebum, the skin's natural oil, but it can still lose water. In winter:

  • cold, dry air and heaters pull water out of the top layer of skin
  • hot showers strip the surface oils that hold water in
  • people with oily skin often keep using strong foaming face washes from summer

The result is skin that is shiny on the nose and forehead but tight, rough or even peeling on the cheeks. This is often called dehydrated oily skin. Our guide to night cream for dehydrated skin explains the difference between dry and dehydrated.

Signs your oily skin needs a winter change

  • Your face feels tight right after washing.
  • Makeup or sunscreen looks patchy or flaky by midday.
  • You see both shine and small dry flakes, especially around the nose.
  • Your skin looks dull rather than glowing, even when it is oily.
  • Pimples seem to increase when your skin feels dry.

Morning routine for oily skin in winter

  1. Cleanse gently. Use a mild, low-foam face wash with lukewarm water. If your skin is not oily when you wake up, plain water is fine.
  2. Hydrate. A few drops of a watery hyaluronic acid or niacinamide serum on slightly damp skin, if you use one.
  3. Moisturise lightly. A gel or light cream. Many oily-skin types can stay with a gel in the morning, even in winter.
  4. Sunscreen. Winter sun still causes tanning and uneven tone. Choose a gel or fluid sunscreen if creams feel greasy.

Night routine for cold-weather oily skin

  1. Wash off sunscreen and pollution. A mild cleanser is enough; double cleansing is optional if you wear heavy makeup.
  2. Pat dry and leave the skin a little damp.
  3. Apply a light cream. This is where most oily skin types should switch from a gel to a light cream in winter. Use a pea-sized amount and less on the T-zone.
  4. Spot care. Add extra cream only to dry patches on the cheeks or around the nose.

Ingredients that suit oily skin in the cold

  • Niacinamide: helps skin look less shiny and supports the barrier. See niacinamide for pores and oily skin.
  • Hyaluronic acid and glycerin: add water without heaviness.
  • Aloe vera and centella: help skin feel soothed and comfortable.
  • Light plant oils such as avocado in a balanced cream: add softness without a greasy layer for most people.

Salicylic acid is a common choice for oily, congested skin, but in winter it can add to dryness, so many people use it less often. None of our creams contain salicylic acid.

From our range, the Avocado Korean Night Cream 25 g (₹649) is lighter than our 30 g Avocado Night Cream and suits combination and oily skin at night, with avocado, aloe vera, vitamin B3 and kojic acid. The Avocado Glow Cream 15 g (₹399) is a light whipped cream with avocado and aloe vera only, for day or night. You can compare more options on our night cream shop page.

Winter mistakes that make oily skin worse

  • Skipping moisturiser because the skin is oily.
  • Very hot water on the face.
  • Strong scrubs to clear flakes; they leave skin rougher.
  • Switching to a very heavy cream overnight; it can clog pores for some people. Go one step richer, not five.
  • Dropping sunscreen because it is cold or cloudy.
  • Too many actives at once. Retinol, acids and strong serums can all feel harsher in dry air.

When to see a dermatologist

See a dermatologist if your skin is red, itchy and scaly around the nose and eyebrows, if pimples become painful or cystic, or if dryness and oiliness do not settle after a few weeks of gentle care.

Short answers

Why is my skin oily and dry in winter? Oily skin can still lose water in cold, dry air, so it can be shiny and flaky at the same time.

Should oily skin use moisturiser in winter? Yes. A light cream or gel helps skin hold water without adding shine.

Is a gel enough for oily skin in winter? Often in the day, but most oily skin does better with a light cream at night in cold, dry weather.

Do I need sunscreen in winter if my skin is oily? Yes. Choose a gel or fluid sunscreen if creams feel heavy.

Can a heavy cream cause pimples in winter? It can for some people, so move only one step richer and use less on the T-zone.
