Night Cream vs Face Oil: Which Is Better for Your Skin at Night?

Night cream vs face oil: a night cream contains both water and oils, so it moisturises and helps hold hydration in, while a face oil contains only oils, so it softens and seals but adds no water. For most Indian skin, especially oily or combination skin in humid weather, a night cream is the easier everyday choice. A face oil works best as an extra step on very dry skin.

You can also use both. The trick is knowing when an oil helps and when it just leaves you greasy.

What a night cream does

A night cream is an emulsion, a blend of water-based and oil-based ingredients held together. The water part gives skin moisture, and the oil part slows down how fast that moisture escapes overnight. Many night creams also carry active ingredients such as niacinamide, kojic acid or glutathione.

That balance is why a cream suits most skin types. It feels comfortable, absorbs fairly well and does more than one job. Our guide to night cream vs moisturizer explains how night creams differ from everyday moisturisers.

What a face oil does

A face oil is pure lipids, either a single oil or a blend. Common examples include jojoba, almond, rosehip, argan, avocado and traditional blends like kumkumadi. Oils make skin feel soft and smooth and add a glow, and they form a layer that reduces water loss.

But an oil cannot add water to skin. If your skin is dehydrated, meaning it lacks water rather than oil, an oil on its own may leave the surface shiny while skin still feels tight underneath. Our guide to night cream for dehydrated skin explains the difference between dry and dehydrated.

When a night cream is the better choice

  • You have oily, combination or acne-prone skin.
  • You live somewhere hot and humid, such as Mumbai, Chennai or Kolkata.
  • You want active ingredients for a more even-looking or brighter-looking complexion.
  • Your skin feels tight after washing, which often means it needs water as well as oil.
  • You want one simple step instead of two.

Mirc Glow's Avocado Night Cream gives you avocado's softness in a cream, along with aloe vera, niacinamide and kojic acid. You can compare all our night creams on one page.

When a face oil can make sense

  • Your skin is very dry, rough or flaky, especially in a North Indian winter.
  • You sleep with the AC on and wake up with tight cheeks even after cream.
  • Your skin is mature and feels dry by evening.
  • You like a simple routine with few ingredients and have tested the oil without breakouts.

A note on coconut oil: it is popular in Indian homes, but it is heavy and many people with acne-prone skin find it clogs their pores on the face. It is often better kept for hair and body.

How to use night cream and face oil together

If you want both, oil goes last, because it would stop a cream from spreading well if it went first.

  1. Wash your face and pat dry.
  2. Apply serum, if you use one.
  3. Apply a pea-sized amount of night cream.
  4. Press one or two drops of face oil on top, focusing on dry areas.

Another easy method is to mix one drop of oil into your night cream in your palm and apply them together. Start with two or three nights a week and see how your skin feels in the morning. Our guide on how to layer serum and night cream explains the full order.

Patch test any new oil, even natural ones. Essential oils in particular can irritate some people.

What about avocado oil vs avocado cream?

Avocado is one of the richer plant oils and is well liked for dry skin. If you are deciding between pure avocado oil and an avocado-based cream for your face, our separate guide on avocado oil vs avocado cream for face compares them in detail. In short, the cream suits most people better because it adds water as well as oil.

Adjusting for Indian seasons

  • Summer and monsoon: a light night cream alone is usually enough. Skip the oil, or use one drop only on dry patches.
  • Winter: a richer cream, and a drop of oil on top if skin still feels tight.
  • AC rooms all year: skin can dry out even in summer. A thin layer of cream, with a drop of oil on cheeks, can help.

Whatever you use, wear sunscreen every morning, especially if your night cream contains kojic acid. And if you are still choosing a cream, our guide to the best night cream for glowing skin explains how to pick by skin type.

Short answers

Is face oil better than night cream? Not for most people. A night cream adds water and oil, while a face oil only adds oil.

Can I use face oil instead of night cream? Very dry skin sometimes can, but most skin, especially oily skin, does better with a cream.

Does face oil go before or after night cream? After, as the last step, or mixed into the cream in your palm.

Is face oil good for oily skin? It is usually too heavy for oily skin in Indian summers. A light night cream is easier.

Can I use coconut oil as a night cream? Many people with acne-prone skin find it clogs pores on the face, so it is better kept for hair and body.
