Night Cream in Summer: Yes or No? A Simple Guide for India

Night cream in summer: yes or no? For most people, yes, just less of it and in a lighter texture. Heat makes skin oilier on the surface, but it can still lose water overnight, especially under a fan or AC, so a thin layer of night cream keeps skin comfortable without feeling heavy.

A few people with very oily skin in hot, humid places can skip it on some nights. Here is how to decide for your skin, your city and your bedroom.

Why skin still needs moisture in summer

Sweat and oil are not the same as hydration. Your skin can look shiny on the outside and still feel tight or rough underneath, especially if you wash your face often, sit in AC all day or spend time in the sun.

Washing more often in summer also strips some of the skin's own oils. A light night cream helps put back a little of that comfort while you sleep. Skipping moisturiser completely can sometimes make oily skin feel tighter, and some people find their skin then looks shinier by the next afternoon.

Humid summer vs dry summer

India has two very different summers, and your night cream should match yours.

Humid heat

Cities like Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Kochi have sticky, humid summers. Skin feels oily and creams sit on the surface longer. Use a lighter texture, apply less, and let it settle for 20 to 30 minutes before you lie down. Our guide to lightweight night cream for humid weather goes deeper on textures.

Dry heat

Places like Delhi, Jaipur and much of North and Central India have dry, hot summers with loo winds. Skin can feel dry and rough even in May. Here, many people need nearly as much night cream as in winter, especially on the cheeks.

How to use night cream in summer

  1. Wash your face at night with a gentle face wash to clear sweat and sunscreen.
  2. Apply a light hydrating layer, such as a thin layer of aloe vera gel or a hydrating serum, if you like.
  3. Use less cream than in winter. Half to one pea-sized amount for the whole face.
  4. Press it in gently rather than rubbing a thick layer.
  5. Apply 20 to 30 minutes before bed, ideally under a fan, so it settles.
  6. Wash your face in the morning and apply sunscreen.

For more on the amount, see how much night cream to use. If you are deciding between gel and cream, our guide to aloe vera gel or night cream at night compares them.

Kojic acid and the summer sun

Summer is when sunscreen matters most. If your night cream contains kojic acid, which is commonly used to help reduce the look of dark spots and tan, wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning and reapply when you are outdoors for long. Without it, the strong Indian sun can quickly undo what your night routine is doing.

If your skin feels sunburnt, hot or stings, pause active creams for a few nights and use only a plain moisturiser until it settles. Our guide to night cream for tanned skin explains what to expect with summer tan.

Summer night cream tips

  • Store your jar well. Keep it away from direct sun, hot windowsills and parked cars, and close the lid tightly.
  • Change pillowcases more often in sweaty weather.
  • Do not use cream on prickly heat. Keep those areas cool and dry.
  • Keep hair oil off your face at night, as heat makes it spread more.
  • Be consistent. A more even-looking tone usually takes eight to twelve weeks of steady use with sunscreen.
