Can I Use Night Cream on My Neck? How to Do It Right

Can I use night cream on neck skin? Yes. Most face night creams are fine to use on the neck, and it is a good habit, because the neck is often forgotten even though it gets the same sun, sweat and pollution as your face.

The neck does need a slightly gentler approach. The skin there is thinner, has fewer oil glands and can be more sensitive to active ingredients. Here is how to do it properly.

Can I use night cream on neck skin safely?

For most people, yes. If a night cream suits your face without stinging or breakouts, it will usually suit your neck too. There are three things to keep in mind:

  • Thinner skin. Neck skin can feel actives like kojic acid, retinol or acids more strongly than your cheeks do.
  • Less oil. The neck tends to be drier than the face, so it often welcomes a little extra moisture.
  • More friction. Collars, dupattas, chains and sweat all rub against it during the day.

So patch test on the side of your neck first, even if you already use the cream on your face. Apply a small amount below the ear for three nights and check for redness or itching.

Face vs neck: what changes

How to apply night cream on your neck

  1. Cleanse your neck along with your face. Sweat and sunscreen collect in the folds, so do not skip it.
  2. Pat dry and wait a minute.
  3. Take about half a pea-sized amount of cream and warm it between your fingertips.
  4. Smooth it on with light upward strokes, from the base of the neck up to the jaw. Do not press hard or pull the skin down.
  5. Cover the sides and the back of the neck lightly, where sun often reaches.
  6. Wash your hands and let the cream settle for 20 minutes before lying down.

Whatever is left on your fingers after your face is often enough for the neck. Our guide on how to apply night cream explains the full routine, and how much night cream to use helps you get the amount right.

Kojic acid creams on the neck

Kojic acid is commonly used to help reduce the look of dark spots and uneven tone, but it can sting thin skin. On the neck:

  • Start with every other night for the first two weeks.
  • Avoid applying it on skin that is freshly waxed, shaved, scratched or sunburnt.
  • Stop if you feel burning, see redness or notice itching.
  • Wear sunscreen on your neck every morning. Many people put sunscreen on the face and forget the neck.

Mirc Glow's Avocado Night Cream contains avocado, aloe vera, niacinamide and kojic acid, and its richer texture suits the drier skin of the neck. If you prefer a cream without kojic acid, the Avocado Glow Cream 15g has just avocado and aloe vera. You can compare all our night creams on one page. For more on the ingredient itself, read kojic acid side effects.

What about a dark-looking neck?

Many people search for a night cream because the neck looks darker than the face. There are a few common reasons:

  • Sun exposure, since the neck is often left without sunscreen.
  • Friction from collars, chains and dupattas.
  • Perfume sprayed on the neck and then exposed to sun.
  • Dry, rough skin, which can look duller.

A moisturising night cream and daily sunscreen can help the neck feel softer and look more even over time, usually after eight to twelve weeks. But please see a doctor if your neck has thick, velvety, darker patches, especially around the folds or with similar patches in the underarms. This can sometimes be linked to health conditions such as insulin resistance, and a cream is not the answer. Our guide to the causes of uneven skin tone explains more.

Neck care habits that help

  • Sunscreen on the neck every morning, and reapply if you are outdoors.
  • Perfume on clothes, not on neck skin, especially on sunny days.
  • Clean chains and necklaces, and take them off at night.
  • Gentle washing. Do not scrub the neck hard with a loofah or rough towel.
  • Extend your routine to the upper chest if that area is dry or gets sun.

Do you need a separate neck cream?

Usually not. "Neck creams" are often just moisturisers in different packaging. Your regular night cream, used gently and in a slightly smaller amount, does the same job for most people. If your neck skin is very sensitive, choose a simple, fragrance-free cream for that area instead of the active one you use on your face.
